Current Tunage: Thrice – Daedalus
The new Thrice EP’s (Air and Earth) leaked. And they are GOOD. So GOOD. Joy.

The worst is over.

Current Tunage: As Cities Burn – Thus From My Lips, By Yours, My Sin Is Purged
Time can always be measured by how many instants have passed in succession since I listened to this band.

I quote this song a lot. Here is the full text:

Well, I’ve got a will but I want Yours,
I’ve got a growing heap of crosses and burdens
I’ve simply lost heart to shoulder.
(Simply no strength to lift)
I’ve always been a man in need
‘Cause I keep stepping in and out of the shadow.

Caught by the drift and pitch of whatever it is
That keeps me coming back
I want out!
‘Cause I’m getting sick
Sick from all this swerving
Driver, sick from turning on You.

Someone show me a hole in this cycle!
Show me the way away,
And I’m coming back the way I came.
No! I’ve seen this place before!
Surely this is no place for the light of this world!

Oh, how sweet the sound…
I know it saved but is it changing a wretch like me?
Oh my God, how sweet is the sound…
I once was blind, but now I just look away.

Oh my bride, I don’t want to know what I’d be without
Forgiveness brushing these adulterous lips.
-As Cities Burn “Thus From My Lips, By Yours, My Sin Is Purged”

One essay rewrite (in progress), three exams – one each week for the next 3 weeks. First tomorrow. Studying now. GL HF.

Current Tunage: Puller – Wishing
Puller = Rock & Roll. Late 90s. Tooth & Nail. Win. Missed listening to this.

I’m sitting down to write my last paper. It will be a feminist theory reading of Pedro the Lion’s “Control” album. I’m planning to have fun writing it. I’ve always wanted to do a critical reading of a concept album… and though I’m not a feminist in the traditional sense (or much in the “new” sense, either), it promises to be a fun exercise. Plus the album lends itself to that sort of reading. The irony will be that it’s a man (me) doing a feminist reading of a concept record by a man (David Bazan, in this case) which is about a man (the protagonist – whose life is ripped apart by his adulterous heart).

So yes, it will be fun. I’ve been looking forward to this all term.

Current Tunage: Neon Horse – Crazy Daisy
Weird lyrics. Great song. Steph may just get me into 80s yet… although it won’t be actual music from the 80s, just stuff from now that sounds like it. :P

One.

Paper.

Left.

Breathe.

…tell me, are you free?

Current Tunage: Thrice – Firebreather
What a great opening track for the Fire EP. I have been, and will continue to INSIST that Thrice is one of the most important bands in music today, and possibly in all time.

Six days. Three papers. See you on the other side, with a cry of FREEDOM.

Tell me, are you free?
Tell me, are you free?
In word or thought or deed,
Tell me are you free?
While the gallows stand…

And bullets lance the bravest lungs,
We fold our hands and hold our tongues.

Tell me, are you free…
When the fear falls in you?
Tell me, are you free…
When the fear falls in you?

Tell me, are you free?
Tell me, are you free?
In word or thought or deed,
Tell me, are you free?
While the gallows stand…

And bullets lance the bravest lungs,
Will I fold my hands or hold my tongue.

Or let the flames lick at my feet,
Or breathe in fire and know I’m free,
Flames will rise and devour me,
Oh, to breathe in fire and know I’m free!

…now I’m free!
-Thrice “Firebreather”

Current Tunage: Thrice – Come All You Weary
First track to surface from the new Thrice EP’s (Air & Earth) due out in April. I’ll be quite honest; They could just put this track on repeat for the full 16 and it would be worth the price of admission. Dustin and friends just continue to get better and better.

Ever feel like you’ve been run over by not one, but multiple trains? Yeah.

Also, this song I’m listening to right now is a rather supernatural experience when every nerve ending in your body tingles to the music. Transcendent even. I think the ibuprofen has worn off. Sigh.

So, while being thoroughly influenza, I’ve accomplished the following: Sleep (kind of). Watch 3 episodes of the Sarah Connor Chronicles (epic win). Think (kind of). Nap. Have a disjointed conversation with a loved one. Eat (amen). Take drugs (the ‘every nerve ending tingling to sounds’ thing got old, quick). Play Dota horribly (3-13 wd? ewww). Remember I need to write essays (orly?). Think about writing essays (thinking not go so well). Sweat profusely in a chilly room from fever (remove most of clothes).

It’s been an interesting day.

In short, I think I’ll get the flu shot next year. I miss it.

I also miss typing being fluid and enjoyable rather than this poking daggers thing, and showers feeling comforting instead of assaulting, and brain functioning properlies.

Thoughts for the day, which I’ve stolen from people I value, who have had a profound impact on my wellbeing and growth:

“He is risen, and because of that… so am I.”
- A.C.

“God pours out mercy on sinner and saint alike. All I know is, that includes me.”
- M.S.

I have a body flu. It’s not a butt or gut flu, it’s a body flu. Every nerve ending is on high alert. Having a shower this morning felt like being shot with tiny bullets all over my body. Thank God for Ibuprofen. And for a self-imposed day off tomorrow to not medicate. I dislike medicating. I’m mostly delirious right now, but as I seem to be also mostly coherent… I pray.

Current Tunage: Oh, Sleeper – Vices Like Vipers
GREAT COUNSELLOR, TAKE WHAT’S LEFT!

This is the first of two posts today. I head off to work in like 5 minutes, but I wanted to do a couple things first.

The initial is this – to reference back to a year ago, around last Easter. It’s one of my favourite posts here, ever. And I mean, ever.

The following is this – to draw comparison, and give thanks. So much has changed.

More to come this evening.

Current Tunage: Oh, Sleeper – The End Of A Dark Campaign
I realized that what this reminds me of is more recent Underoath (ie. stuff from Define The Great Line). Except… it’s not Underoath. Kind of like The Appleseed Cast and Cool Hand Luke aren’t Radiohead – but are still awesome. “Samey”, but unique. Speaking of which, I can’t wait to hear some new Underoath… wonder if they have anything coming down the pipes?

I’ve been busy, speaking in whispers and bathing in looseleaf. Getting up early in the morning yesterday to finish a paper due at 9am, and getting up at noon out of exhaustion today after 5 hours of loading a friend’s moving van the other afternoon. Sleep is flux.

Right now my mind is full of the thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas (with echoes of Jacques Derrida) – mostly about the nature of “the other” and “alterity” and other such things as time, temporality, and death. Considering deeply the idea of ethics as first philosophy, and the concept that philosophy might be the “wisdom of love” instead of the “love of wisdom”. I really, really like Levinas. A lot. Go Team France!

Go, Jerry! Write the paper already!

Current Tunage: Neon Horse – Kick Yer Askin’ For It
Neon Horse is one of the weirdest/funnest bands I’ve ever had the utter pleasure of listening to. And I don’t even know who is in the band… Ah, mystery. Think 80s rock meets weird vocalist(s) meets 800 pounds of bizarre feeling. What a delicious mixture.

Hey. Thought I’d drop by. It’s been a little while, and I haven’t had a lot to say because I’ve been having good, good conversation with my friend Joey… and we’ve been having it HERE. Please feel free to join in if you have something valuable to add. Otherwise, try to follow the discussion!

It’s got my adrenaline pumping, at least. After weeks (months) of discussing a lot of crap at school that is ultimately of little consequence, it’s really nice to have a small place to really delve into things that *actually* matter.

…not to say I don’t love Coleridge or Deleuze or Nietzsche or Derrida or Levinas or Blake or Donne or etc. But they don’t handle a candle next to Jesus or Paul or Peter or Job or David or Solomon.

In other news, I’m feeling pretty good. We (as in, my fam) are all off to help dear Stephers move tomorrow [OOPS I MEAN TODAY GOSH ITS LATE... EARLY], which should be good times and phun. You all have phun too, k?
