Today I watched Mark Driscoll’s recent appearance at the 2008 Desiring God conference which was entitled: “How Sharp the Edge? Christ, Controversy, and Cutting Words”.
Suffice it to say, it is Driscoll at his very best. I’m still digesting what I’ve heard, but the challenge to me (and perhaps even more so to many I know) is going to be immense applying some of what he has brought to the attention of this branch of theological persuasion I call home.

#3 written by Jer 3 years agoI’ve said before I don’t agree with everything that comes out of the man’s mouth… but having watched a considerable amount of his preaching, I’m not sure I’d typecast him based on his Shack Attacks™ – maybe chalk that up to some (rightly deserved) theological shock with regard to what the book suggests about important things like Scripture and God and the Atonement.
As for his image, for what it’s worth I think he’s been doing his part to shed what’s negative about that image for awhile now – and you’ll see some of it here: repentance for sins of speech… matched with what still comes across as a profound challenge to be faithful to God’s Word and utilize words in a way that is consistent with that faithfulness.
I’d still suggest checking it out, it’s a really good breakdown of what kind of speech approach to take to different categories of people (sheep, swine, wolves, dogs, shepherds). I’ll leave it at that – don’t want to spoil the awesomeness.
And frankly, who doesn’t want to be an edgy/conservative man’s man?

Although Mark Driscoll’s reactionism was regrettable, I think now that I’ve read a few more thought-out rebuttals of the book, I’m more inclined to agree with him. The above is an example, and a good one at that.

I’m annoyed with him because of the brattishness of his preaching against The Shack. I saw fearful, uninformed spite. Driscoll is smart and has the ability to see philisophical and emotional stuff, but his public image is at odds with that, and he plays his “edgy/conservative, Man’s Man” image up at the expense of his true perspectives and abilities.
